What is Economic Development?

“Find your place on the planet. Dig in, and take responsibility from there.” -Gary Snyder
Economic Development in Ashland County, Wisconsin
What is Economic Development? There is no one single answer but definitions abound -- often mentioning
  • Enhancing the economic, social, and ecological sustainability and well-being of a community
  • Activities that facilitate the creation of new businesses
  • The expansion and retention of existing businesses and
  • Attraction of new business to to the area.
  • Economic development facilitates job creation -- a foundation of the economy and a pillar of community.

We believe in improving the economic well-being of a community through efforts that support job creation, job retention, tax base enhancements, and quality of life. We recognize that there is no single strategy to achieving this kind of success -- but there are many metrics by which to measure, perhaps varying from community to community.

Our activities support the process of building strong, adaptive economies driven by local assets and realities, a diverse industry base, and a commitment to equality of opportunity and sustainable practices.

Within Ashland County there are different communities, and each presents with its own values that make for unique challenges in economic development. Success will look different to each community, and dedicated leadership can help raise awareness, help inspire engagement toward a common vision, and motivate stakeholders into action.

We share a common vision of local financially, socially and ecologically sustainable businesses that are well-connected, fueled by economic opportunity, and possesed of an energized workforce. And we welcome YOU!
